Complaint
Filed Against Memphis Reserve Police Officer
Memphis,
Tennessee - David Kustoff, United States Attorney for the Western District
of Tennessee, My Harrison, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau
of Investigation-Memphis Field Division, and Director Larry Godwin of
the Memphis Police Department announced today that a complaint was filed
in federal court against Memphis Reserve Police Officer, ANDREW HUNT,
29, charging him with three robberies of drug dealers committed while
wearing his uniform and driving a marked squad car.
According
to the complaint, in May 2005, HUNT approached a drug dealer and proposed
setting up robberies of his drug suppliers. HUNT proposed that CW1 would
arrange the delivery of cocaine. HUNT while in uniform and driving a
squad car would make a traffic stop and steal drugs from the drug dealer.
As
stated in the complaint, the first incident was on July 21, 2005 when
HUNT stopped a drug dealer at Volintine and Brown. HUNT robbed the drug
dealer of $1000 in cash, 1 Kilogram of Powdered Cocaine, a $15,000 watch,
and a expensive T-Mobile cell phone. HUNT told CW2 that if he could
pay HUNT $15,000, he would return the 1 Kilogram of Cocaine. On the
following day, HUNT contacted CW2 to see if he had the money. HUNT agreed
to take $9,500 instead and instructed CW2 where to leave the money and
wait at a nearby payphone for further instructions. CW2 placed the money
where instructed and the money was taken but the drugs were not returned.
The
following day, HUNT met CW1 and payed him $5,000 for setting up the
robbery. The complaint further alleges, CW1 arranged another robbery
to occur September 12, 2005. HUNT while in uniform and driving a squad
car, made a traffic stop of two hispanic males at Riverdale and Winchester.
The men were delivering 4 Kilograms of Powdered Cocaine. With the assistance
of Laterrica "Nookie" Woods, charged in a separate complaint,
HUNT ordered the men to call someone to deliver the money so that they
would not be arrested. When they could not arrange for the money to
be delivered, HUNT arrested the two men, however, he only tagged and
charged them with 189 grams of the 4 Kilograms they had in their possession.
According
to the complaint, On April 12, 2004 an undercover operation conducted
by MPD and FBI resulted in arrest of ANDREW HUNT. HUNT at approximately
7:30pm made a traffic stop of an undercover car which he believed contained
3 Kilograms of Cocaine. HUNT placed the cooperating witness under arrest
and contacted the Organized Crime Unit (OCU), however HUNT only turned
over 2 Kilograms of the powdered substance to OCU officers. HUNT was
asked to complete his paperwork and arrest tickets and report to OCU
with the evidence. After being arrested at OCU, the 3rd Kilogram of
powdered substance was found concealed in a bag in HUNT's squad car.
After being advised of his rights, HUNT confessed to robbing the drug
dealers and his intent to keep what he thought was 1 Kilogram of Cocaine.
This
investigation initiated with the Memphis Police Department Security
Squad and then requested assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant United States Attorney Steve Parker is handling the case for
the government.
