CARJACKER SENTENCED TO 119 MONTHS

Memphis, TN - William Leach, age 48, of Harrisburg, PA, was sentenced on October 21, 2008 by United States District Judge Bernice B. Donald to 119 months in federal prison for carjacking, announced Lawrence J. Laurenzi, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

According to documents filed in court, On April 25, 2006, Leach entered Sunsations Tanning and Swimwear at 7948 Winchester Road in Memphis, displayed a knife, and instructed a female employee to empty the cash register.  Leach then forced the employee into her car at knifepoint and drove her to a bank, where he withdrew money from her bank account.  After using the employee’s money to purchase crack cocaine, Leach released her later that same day and drove her car to Sikeston, MO, where he was arrested two days later.

Leach was indicted in April 2006 and charged with one count of Carjacking.  He pleaded guilty in May 2008.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Safe Streets Task Force, a joint federal, state, and local task force which includes officers from the Memphis Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff's Office.  Assistant United States Attorney Arun G. Rao handled the case for the government.
